Organization: Association Concerning Sexual Violence Against Women

Nature: Flag-selling for fundraising

Details: 1 in 7 women in Hong Kong have experienced sexual violence.* Victims of sexual violence are closer than we think. If witnessed sexual violence, would you give the victim a hand?

According to the research study “Investigation of MTR Indecent Assault and Clandestine Photo-taking Cases” **, only 4% of 70 witnesses of sexual violence took action to help and support the victims (which includes reporting to police and MTR staff).

We know that a lack of concern is not the reason that people turn a blind eye, but most lack the knowledge, and feel embarrassed, to offer help or take action in public – but this leaves the victim helpless.

In order to raise public awareness to sexual violence and encourage the witness to stand up for the victims, the Association is using “Turning a blind eye again” as this year’s Flag Day theme (New Territories on 1st Aug, 2015).

We believe that with your support, we can work together to eliminate sexual violence!

* A Survey on Hong Kong Women’s experience of Sexual Violence 2013
** Research interviewed opinions of 537 respondents and was conducted by Women-Friendly Environment Group under the Association, from Oct to Nov 2012.
