In Hong Kong, most children get to enjoy a wide range of extra-curricular activities to develop their interest and potentials. However, for students from Liannan Zhaigang Town Huilong Primary School in Guangdong province, despite studying very hard, poor school environment and the lack of resources have made it difficult for them to pursue their interests or dreams…

Xiaojie the Reader

10-year-old Xiaojie is a grade 3 student at Huilong Primary School. Reading and physical education are his favourites! However, his school is so old and has been classified as a dangerous structure due to the many leaking and broken walls. Insufficient facilities and multi-purpose spaces also limited students’ choices in extra-curricular activities. Xiaojie hopes that his school will have an integrated building that includes a library and gym so that he can read and exercise more.

Xiaoyan the Dancer

Studying in the same school, 10-year-old Xiaoyan comes from a family of 5. With dad working in the city most of the time, Xiaoyan’s mom has to take up the heavy duty farm work alone and look after the whole family. To share her mom’s burden, Xiaoyan will do household chores after school every day and take care of her grandparents.

Xiaoyan loves dancing and her teacher also says that she is gifted! Unfortunately, without any suitable facilities and music room at school, Xiaoyan has no place to practice or develop her interest and can only go home after school. Her talent will go buried and undeveloped if nothing changes…

Used Book Recycling Campaign 2014

Donations to this year’s Used Book Recycling Campaign will be used to support Huilong Primary School in their construction of a new integrated building that can provide reading room, music and dance studio, science lab and sports equipment room for students like Xiaojie and Xiaoyan, so that they can enjoy a more holistic development that leads to a life in fullness.
