International Volunteer Day (IVD) is a chance for volunteer-involving organizations and individual volunteers spread their influence by promoting their contributions to development at different levels. IVD also serves as an unique opportunity for volunteer-involving organizations to work with government agencies, non-profit organizations, community groups and the private sector.

Established by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in 1985, IVD has gathered governments, the UN system and civil society organizations’ efforts to join volunteers around the world to celebrate the Day on 5 December every year since then. This year, IVD does not only celebrate volunteerism in all its facets, but also pay special tribute to volunteers working towards the new global goals—sustainable development.
